Oh, What a Savior!
When I first heard “O What a Savior” it brought me to tears. Over a decade later, I still love to listen to and sing the song.
It caused me to wonder about the origin of this beautiful song.
I couldn’t find a lot of information, but did discover it was written by musician Marvin P. Dalton in 1948.
Dalton was born on March 9, 1906 in Arkansas and married Audrey Pauli in 1932. He wrote at least fifteen poems or songs and died on November 28, 1987 in Tulsa County, Oklahoma.
The song has been covered by the Cathedrals and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound.
I’m so glad he gave his life’s blood for this rebel and redeemed my life.
I took piano lessons from Marvin p dalton in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1957. Great gentleman who loved southern gospel, helping many quartets along the way.
What a wonderful legacy and memory. Thank you for sharing.
Hi there! Little known fact, the song was written in the living room of my grandparents, Raymond and Winona Riggs. I believe it was written during the convention of the National Association of Free Will Baptists when it was held at the Central Free Will Baptist Church near Detroit, MI.
Thank you so much for sharing. I love these personal details.
