Hymn Story: Jesus and His Love

“Jesus and His Love” is a hymn that I heard at the end of a Little House on the Prairie episode (The Gift).

It is a hymn that is new to me and seems to have been written by W. Howard Doane and John R. Clemons.

W. Howard Doane wrote the refrain or chorus for this hymn. He was born on Feb. 3, 1832 in Preston, CT and headed a large woodworking machinery plant and supported various ministries including Dwight D. Moody’s. He composed around 1000 tunes, songs, hymns, and anthems and edited over forty songbooks. Some of his most popular hymns include “Near the Cross,” “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” “Pass me Not,” “More Love to Thee,” “Rescue the Perishing,” “Tell me the Old, Old Story.”  He died on Dec. 24, 1915.

John R. Clements provided the verses. He was born on November 28, 1868 in County Armagh, Ireland. At the age of two he was brought to the United States. At a young age he began writing poetry. He died in 19476.

According to Hymnary.org, “Jesus and His Love” has been published in nine hymnals.
