Hymn Story: No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus

“No one ever cared for me like Jesus” was written by Charles Weigle, an itinerant evangelist.

The song was written after a very dark period in his life, when his wife left him. She decided she did not want to be an evangelist’s wife. After coming out of his dark spell, Weigle longed to put on paper a song that would share the feelings he’d experienced during those difficult days. The song was first published in 1932.

Charles Weigle was born on Nov. 20, 1871 in Lafayette, Indiana and attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He wrote over 1,000 gospel songs. He died on Dec. 3, 1966 in Chattanooga, Tennessee and is buried beside his second wife, Carrie.
