When We Hold On too Tightly

Six months after having to move suddenly, I still find myself struggling to accept the way everything happened.

On more than one occasion, I have asked myself if I held on too tightly to the home the Lord blessed for me to live in. While I am very grateful for where I currently live and it has grown on me, it does not have the feeling of home the last place had.

My mind turned to one of the Parables of Jesus. Jesus told of the parable of the rich man who stored up his possessions and decided to enjoy the fruits of his labor. However, that very evening his life was demanded of him.

Jesus ended his parable by saying, “”This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” {Luke 12:21}

I don’t know about you, but I would rather be rich towards God than towards the world. That is not to say it is not a very real struggle on a regular basis.

Dr. Charles Stanley states in one of his life principles, “Anything you hold too tightly, you will lose.”

I remember when I was in a relationship, I felt I could not live without this man in my life. But, the relationship was not a healthy relationship and was rich with abuse. Still, I held on too tightly. Only once I surrendered my relationship to the Lord, was He able to come in and work and clean up my mess.

As we begin a new year, this is a great time to take inventory of our hearts and thoughts. Is there something or someone you hold on too to tightly?
