The Lord Has Taken Away My Shame

Last week, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias when he entered the holy of holies.  He was struck mute due to his disbelief.  When we last saw Zacharias he was rushing home, undoubtedly to tell Elisabeth.

Imagine the greeting Zacharias gave his wife

Imagine her surprise when he returned home and was unable to speak.  He must have

quickly found a tablet to write out all that had happened since that morning.  We are not told how Elisabeth reacted to his account, but we are given an indication in the following scriptures of her heart.

Luke 1:24-25 (ASV)
24  And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying,

“probably through mingled feelings of modesty, humility, devotion, and joy… at the end of which time her seclusion was interrupted by the visit of Mary.”  {The Fourfold Gospel: or A Harmony of the Four Gospels.}

Zecharias had to tell Elisabeth

“Did not go into society, both from the delicacy and that she might have more time for devotion.”  {Johnson’s Notes on the New Testament.}

This must have been a time of great contemplation for Elisabeth.  To marvel that the Lord had finally answered her prayers in her old age, after all of this time.   Possibly she pondered why God had chosen now to bless her.

25  Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.

“In God’s gracious dealings with us we ought to observe his gracious regards to us. He has looked on us with compassion and favour, and therefore has thus dealt with us.”

Elisabeth conceived

{Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.}

“To be childless was regarded a great calamity in Israel.”   {Johnson’s Notes on the New Testament.}

Elisabeth finally felt that she had found favor from the Lord.  In her eyes, her shame had been removed with the coming of this child.

In what ways has the Lord removed your shame?
