Mothers of the Bible: Lois and Eunice, a Faithful Example
As we draw the series on Mothers of the Bible to a close, there is one more mother that I could not overlook. This is actually a mother and daughter, who are only briefly mentioned, but leave a lasting legacy.
Lois and Eunice are only mentioned briefly in scripture, yet we can learn so much from
these mothers.
“Having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also.” {2 Timothy 1:5}
In 2 Timothy, Paul is writing to Timothy, his protégé.
He mentions the faith of Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, and mother, Eunice.
Paul is acknowledging that this is where Timothy’s faith was learned.
Barnes Notes on the New Testament says, “In these circumstances, the apostle seems to have resolved to place before him strong reasons to induce him to devote himself steadfastly to the cause of religion, and not to allow those things which might tend to alienate him from Christianity to have any effect on his mind.”
The Women of the Bible says, Paul “rightly honored as model mentors for rearing children. They had a genuine faith, and they passed it on to young Timothy. They were models not because Timothy turned out so well but because they ministered so faithfully. The genuine faith we share with our own children does take root.”
Do you live out a genuine faith for your children to witness?
