Behind the Hymn: Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer
Praise Him, Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer is a hymn by beloved songwriter
Chester G. Allen married the melody to the lyrics written by Crosby.
The hymn was first published in 1869 in the Bright Jewels songbook.
This is a hymn that praises Jesus and reminds us to praise him. We are not told what inspired Crosby to write the song. Maybe she was inspired by the welcome Jesus received on Palm Sunday as he entered into Jerusalem.
Crosby wrote many songs of praise in her 8,000 songs to God. The song may have been a time when her heart was full of praise for her savior.
Crosby actually praised God for her blindness. She said, “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.”
How do you praise God?
