Hall of Faith: Jeremiah, Praised God in Adversity

In the Hall of Faith is mentioned and others had trial of cruel mockings and yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment. One of those that endured mockings and imprisonment was the prophet, Jeremiah.

The name Jeremiah means God exalts. Jeremiah was a Benjamite. He is also refereed to as the weeping prophet.

In the early days of is ministry, Jeremiah was primarily a preaching prophet.

Jeremiah did not stop preaching repentance

In Jeremiah 11, we discover if he did not propheise in the name of the Lord or he will die. The people develop a plot to kill him, but the Lord reveals it to Jeremiah. However, the Lord tells Jeremiah that He will bring disaster on the people in the year of their punishment.

Jeremiah eventually complains about the attacks to the Lord, who reveals to him that they will only become worse.

Jeremiah wrote down the words of God, but the king destroyed his writing

In Jeremiah 20, we are told that the priest, Pashhur, had Jeremiah beaten and placed in the stocks. The next day when he is released, Jeremiah says to him that he will make him terror on every side and that he will deliver him into the hands of Babylon. {v.3-6}

Jeremiah cries out to God in which you can see his emotions range from anger to praise to cursing the day he was born {v.7-18}.

He says in verse 9, But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”

So, what can we learn from Jeremiah?

Jeremiah was beaten and imprisoned

1. He spoke out on behalf of God

2. He did not let fear or threats stop him

3. He was comforted by God

4. He was mocked for his beliefs

5. He endured beatings and imprisonment for his faith

6. He cried out to God for help

7. He praised God in the midst of his trials

8. He could not stop speaking of God

Jeremiah was mocked, beaten and imprisoned for his beliefs but through it all he never stopped praising God. The word of God was so strong in him that he could not keep quiet.

Do you praise God without ceasing regardless of what you have to face?
