Gifts of the Spirit: Craftsman and Composers
As we reach our last two weeks on spiritual gifts study, we are going to cover spiritual gifts that we often take for advantage or neglect today.
These are two spiritual gifts found in the Old Testament. Both of these have to do with our artistic abilities.
Craftsman—these are special abilities that are given to artists. Jesus was a craftsman in
his carpentry.
In Exodus 35:31-33 the Israelites are constructing the tabernacle. We are told “ And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and wisdom, with intelligence and understanding, and with knowledge and all craftsmanship,
to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, for work in every skilled craft.”
There are a variety of artistic designs, craftsmanship’s and crafts. However, they are all a gift from God.
- “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
- “All the skillful men among those who were performing the work made the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twisted linen and blue and purple and scarlet material, with cherubim, the work of a skillful workman, Bezalel made them.”
Exodus 36:8
- “”Moreover, there are many workmen with you, stonecutters and masons of stone and carpenters, and all men who are skillful in every kind of work. “Of the gold, the silver and the bronze and the iron there is no limit. Arise and work, and may the LORD be with you.”” 1 Chronicles 22:15-16
- “All of them the work of craftsmen They say of them, “Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves!”” Hosea 13:2
- “Another shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of man, so that it may sit in a house.” Isaiah 44:13
- “”As a jeweler engraves a signet, you shall engrave the two stones according to the names of the sons of Israel; you shall set them in filigree settings of gold.” Exodus 28:11
After all, God is the master craftsman. So why should he not bestow some of these gifts
on his people?
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” To read more about God as a master craftsman, turn to Genesis 1 for the entire story.
Composer—David was a man after God’s own heart. He also composed spiritual music, poetry and prose. The entire books of Psalm {most written by King David}, Proverbs {most written by King Solomon}, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs {written by King Solomon} are all written in prose.
- “Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, With the lyre and the sound of melody.” Psalm 98:5
- “I will sing a new song to You, O God; Upon a harp of ten strings I will sing praises to You.” Psalm 144:9
- “Therefore my harp is turned to mourning, And my flute to the sound of those who weep.” Job 30:31
- “Then those who sing as well as those who play the flutes shall say, “All my springs of joy are in you.” Psalm 87:7
- “Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; Sing praises to our God on the lyre” Psalm 147:7
- “Let them praise His name with dancing; Let them sing praises to Him with timbrel and lyre.” Psalm 149:3
- “Why did you flee secretly and deceive me, and did not tell me so that I might have sent you away with joy and with songs, with timbrel and with lyre.” Genesis
31:27
Whether a musician or just a lover of music, we can worship God through music, dance and other creative arts.
Are you gifted with a craft, trade, musical ability, artistic ability or other artistic outlet? Whether you enjoy these professionally or as a hobby, these gifts can be used in a variety of ways to serve others and use them to the glory of God.
