Names of God: Judge

The Lord God is referred to as our judge. 

God establishes right and wrong and is a God of vengeance and recompense, which is to make amends to someone who has suffered or been wronged.

In Hebrew the word is much broader than in English.

Similar names for God are the Righteous judge, Judge of the earth, Judge of Israel, God of justice, Righteous Judge, Judge of the living and the dead and our lawgiver.

In Hebrew the word for judge is shofet and in Greek the word is Kritēs.

There are 76 references to the Lord the judge in scripture.

I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. Judges 11:27

There the upright might reason with him; So should I be delivered for ever from my judge.  Job 23:7 {ASV}

For Jehovah is our judge, Jehovah is our lawgiver, Jehovah is our king; he will save us.   Isaiah 33:22

And the heavens shall declare his righteousness; For God is judge himself.  Psalm 50:6

But God is the judge: He putteth down one, and lifteth up another.  Psalm 75:7  

Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!   James 5:9
