Song Story: We Shall Behold Him

This is a very special song, as Daddy and I often performed this together. In his memory, I played it at his memorial service. Hard to believe we just passed the twenty year mark. This song story is written in his memory.

The song was written by Dottie Rambo.

Rambo and a friend were driving to a revival when an unusually beautiful sunset appeared. She said there were “colors that I had never seen in my lifetime.” She thought of the wonderful prospect of Jesus, “coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matt. 24:30).

It was all she could do to drive as she began to compose the words and  melody in her mind.

While many artists have recorded this song, the best known version is by Sandi Patty. Rambo asked Patty if she would sing the song. She later recalled sharing the song with her arranger, David Clydesdale. She said “we were sitting at my little spinet piano, talking about that song. And while we were sitting there, he {David} started arranging the orchestration, and two hours later, it was done. Wrote it right there on the spot, and the next day the musicians were playing it.”

One day we will see Jesus return, just the way Dottie Rambo did in her mind’s eye.
