Eliza Edmunds Hewitt spent most of her life as an invalid as she suffered from spinal issues. However, she was also a prolific hymn writer.
In 1905, the words of the prophet Micah, inspired her to pen the hymn “Into the Depths of the Sea.” Those words are from Micah 7:19, “He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.”
William Howard Doane provided the melody for the hymn.
