Behind the Hymn: God Will Take Care of You
God Will Take Care of You was written by Civilla D. Martin. She also wrote the well known His Eye Is on the Sparrow.
Civilla Martin was born in 1866 Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of James N. and Irene Hardin Holden, a Baptist Minister.
She married Rev. W. Stillman Martin, a well known Baptist Evangelist.
One Sunday in 1904, Rev. Martin was preparing to preach a good distance from home. Civilla planned to go with him but was too ill to make the journey.
Rev. Martin considered canceling his speaking assignment.
Their young son said “‘Father, don’t you think that if God wants you to preach today, He will take care of Mother while you are away?’”
When he returned home he found his wife greatly improved and busily writing the text to God Will Take Care of You.
Rev. Martin shared with his family that several people had made commitments to Christ.
That very evening, Rev. Martin wrote the music to his wife’s words. That evening two teachers stopped at the house and sung the newly written hymn.
The song was then printed in a songbook Rev. Martin was working on.
