Behind the Song: His Kind of Love

Have you wondered where I got my tag, “Sharing HIS Kind of Love” from?

The phrase comes from the song by the same title.  His Kind of Love was written by Marijohn Wilkin.  His Kind of Love picture

For 15 years I was Daddy’s accompanists on the piano.  This was a song we performed on a regular basis.  After his death, I took the Easter cantata we’d performed, made a few changes and have performed it several times.  When looking for a title for the Easter cantata, the title “His Kind of Love” struck me.  Why?

Because it was God’s love that sent Him from the perfection of heaven to be born of a virgin and live in a sin filled world.  It was God’s kind of love that sent Him to the cross and kept Him on the cross where He died for our sins.  It was God’s kind of love that raised Him from the grave and to ascend in heaven.  It has been God’s kind of love that has brought me through so many difficulties, obstacles and bad choices in this journey we call life.

Slowly over time, God revealed to me that my purpose in life is to show HIS kind of love to those he sends alongmy path.  This isn’t always easy and I constantly feel that I could be more understanding, compassionate and patient, yet I continue to pray and ask God to allow me to share HIS kind of love with others.

Love        Marijohn Wilkin was born on July 14, 1920 in Kemp, Texas.  Her first husband was killed in World War II.

She is best known for the hit, “One Day at a Time.”

In 1974, she wrote “His Kind of Love.”  Sadly, I have been unable to discover what prompted her to write this song.

In 1975, she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. She is credited with helping many songwriters and musicians find their start in the music business over the years.

She formed the publishing company, 17th Avenue Music, which saw great success when its songs were recorded by LeAnn Rimes.

She died on October 28, 2006 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Although I’ve never met Ms. Wilkin, I’m thankful for the message I’m reminded of every time I sing “His Kind of Love.”

How do you show God’s perfect Love to others?

Lyrics to His Kind of Love by Marijohn Wilkin

“If you have seen Me, you’ve seen the Father,” said the Son

So, He completed the earthly task, He had begun

He let this old world have its way, for one dark and tragic day

To bring us love, perfect love, His kind of love

Chorus:It wasn’t nails that held Jesus to the cross

It was His love for us, that made Him pay the cost

And how the angels must have cried, watching helpless, as He died

To bring us love, perfect love, His kind of love

Verse:I can almost feel the Heavens shuddering still

Standing helpless, watching Jesus climb the hill

And asking help from not one man, perfect love makes no demands

He walks in love, perfect love, His kind of love

Verse:“It is finished,” those were the last words spoken

From the body of a man, whose heart was broken

God condemned, by man the judge, accepting judgment without one grudge

To bring us love, perfect love, His kind of love

Verse:It wasn’t nails that held Jesus to the cross

It was His love for us, that made Him pay the cost

And how the angels must have cried, watching helpless, as He died

To bring us love, perfect love, His kind of love
