With Eyes of Faith

Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God, (Hebrews 12:2 ESV).

Did you know the words “believe” and “faith” are used over 4,000 times in the King James Bible? God has a lot to say about faith! He must have thought it an important concept for us to grasp.

When we consider our life, we place our faith in something every day. We trust in so many things: the car we drive, the doctor we visit, the teacher at school, or our friend down the street. We believe that food in a restaurant won’t make us sick, and we have faith that medicine will make us better. We trust in our boss, our spouse, our government, and our children, even the chair we sit upon.

If we can believe in an imperfect and flawed society, why do we struggle so to trust in a perfect and all-knowing God?

In Luke 5, we read the story of a paralyzed man. When Jesus came to their town, his friends went to get him and carried him on a mat to Jesus. When the men were not able to carry him through the large crowd to Jesus, they went to the roof of the house and lowered him down through the roof tiles in front of where Jesus stood. When Jesus saw their faith he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” Then Jesus healed the man. The crippled man got up, picked up his mat, and walked home praising his Savior. [1]

What was it that moved God?

Their faith.

Those men acted on their faith when they went to Jesus. They understood what he could do, the truth of his words, and vastness of his power. In response, Jesus acted on their faith and healed their paralyzed friend. Not only did they see his power, but they saw his great love, his compassion, and his forgiveness.

Eyes of faith see God for who he is. Yet sometimes my vision blurs when I look around me. Instead of running to Jesus for help, I look for other sources. I trust in this world’s philosophy or this world’s methods. I turn to fear when I can’t see my way forward. Even when this world in chaos, we can choose to look to God in faith.

Faith isn’t something we see; it’s a person we believe in. So put on those glasses of faith and look up. Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.

PRAYER: Thank you, Father, that you are the founder and perfecter of my faith. Give me eyes of faith that see who you are. Help me to believe in your vast power, your great love, and your total forgiveness for me. Give me a heart focuses on you and eyes that look up to you in faith and expectancy. Amen.
