Names of God: God

Often, when we speak of the supreme being we refer to him as God.

The term God means creator deity, principal object of faith and supreme being.

Judiasm refers to God as “Him” or “Father” which is why we often refer to him as God the Father. As Christians, we believe God is an eternal being who created the world and preserves all things.

Paul wrote:

• “for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”  {1 Corinthians 8:5-6}
• “The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth.”  {Acts 17:24-27}

Going back in time to the Israelites, the First Commandment {of 10} given to Moses says “I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt.”  {Exodus 20:2}

But, he’s not finished.  The second commandment says “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” and later “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.”  {Exodus 20:3-7}

If we look at the Hebrew, it says “I am Yahweh your Elohim”. Yahweh is the Hebrew name for God. El in Hebrew means “one hwo is strong and has authority}. Elohim means “God is one” and the “God of gods”.

A few other references include:

• ” For all the peoples walk every one in the name of his god; and we will walk in the name of Jehovah our God for ever and ever.”  {Micah 4:5}
• ” But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, [even] to them that believe on his name.”  {John 1:12}
• “And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true God, and him whom thou didst send, [even] Jesus Christ.”  {John 17:6}
• “He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out thence no more: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and mine own new name.”  {Revelation 3:12}

There are many references to the names of God, which is why we are studying these names and the meaning and purpose behind them.
