Names of God: Yahweh

Yahweh was the god of the Israelites.  This was the name revealed to Moses.

God provided Moses with the Ten Commandments and Moses made laws based on these commandments

This is regarded as the personal name of God.

Scholars believe the personal name of God was known long before Moses and used at least by the Levites.

After the Babylonian exile, this name was replaced with the more common name Elohim, meaning God, the universal sovereignty of Israel’s people.

By this time the name Yahweh was regarded as too sacred to be uttered and Adonai “My Lord” was used instead.
