Worshiping with our Talents
For years I’ve gone into nursing homes to sing and share my musical abilities. This experience actually opened the door several years ago when I was seeking a career change. Now, I work in my day job as an activities director. Today, I’m on the other side of the coin and looking for talent and people that are willing to come and share their talents with my residents.
So, when I was thinking about creative praying this thought of worshiping with our talents came to mind. I just briefly touched on this earlier when discussing worshiping with our spiritual gifts.
We all have talents and gifts that we have been blessed with. For each of us these are different.
So, what does scripture say about talents?
- “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” Proverbs 18:16
- “For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. Romans 11:29
- “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.” 1 Timothy 4:14
- “In the beginning God created…” Genesis 1:1
- A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 1 Corinthians 12:7
- God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. Romans 12:6
- Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good servants of God’s various gifts of grace. 1 Peter 4:10
- “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” 2 Timothy 1:6
- Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24
- Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Romans 12:11
- Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 1 Timothy 4:14
How can we use our talents as a form of worship?
- Join the choir or praise team at church
- Sing or play the piano {or any other instrument} at a local nursing home
- Cook for a family in need
- Create fiddle blankets for Alzheimer’s patients
- Create hand mittens, ear muffs, blankets, etc. for the homeless
- Provide an art class for abused women, children in need, or at a local nursing home
- Entertain through dance
- Visit and pray with individuals at the Veteran’s Center or nursing home
- Teach basic computer skills at a Senior Center or local community college for older adults
- Teach a class at church
There are numerous other talents that can be used. While performing or preparing take a time to pray for those you will come into contact with, who will enjoy your talents or who will receive the gifts you’ve made.
