True Love is Unselfish

Recently, I watched Beauty and the Beast and was reminded of the strong message in the story.  The story is one of unselfish love.  The prince is so self-centered he is turned into a beast and can only be transformed when he learns to love unselfishly and is loved in return.  The beast meets Belle, who becomes his prisoner, and slowly the two fall in love.  The beast lets her go, knowing he may never see her again.  This act shows how unselfish his love for her is.  He is willing to risk his future and happiness for her desires, needs and happiness.

Belle leaves the castle, but returns of her own free will.  As the beast lies dying, she admits her love for him.   With her admission of love, the spell is broken and the beast and everything in the castle are returned to their former selves.

Would you return to the castle?

Watching the movie, I was reminded of why it was one of my favorite movies and fairy tales.  The message of unselfish love is strong throughout the theme of the story.

I thought back over the course of my abusive relationship.  I was constantly called selfish and no matter how much I bended, gave my all and tried to prove this man I never made him happy.  He continued to break my spirit, lash out verbally and physically, and call me selfish.

If you are in such a situation, where you are giving your all and it is still enough, ask yourself, is this love unselfish on both of our parts?

Love is patient, love is kind

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 says, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant  or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful…”

Are you in any type of relationship {does not have to be just romantic} where the love is arrogant, rude, irritable, resentful and insist on its on way?

If you are in this type of relationship, is this a relationship worth pursuing?

True love is patient and kind.  True love is unselfish.

How do you love others?
