When Things Don’t Go As Planned

My team and I worked on a presentation around the clock for weeks.  We were all excited

to arrive and carry out our plan.

However, nothing about that day went as planned from the moment we left.  As the day progressed it only went downhill and even the presentation did not go as planned.

We were all hurt and shocked.  “Why?” I cried out to God.

All I wanted to do was crawl up in a ball and cried and the remainder of the week continued to regress.

I shared the situation with a friend and she said, “it’s okay to be hurt.  Whenever something like this happens I give myself time to work through it, feel the pain, and pray about the situation.”

Wow!  We often hear, “get over it”, “you need to move on” or “I can’t believe that’s still bothering you.”

But to hear, “it’s okay” was so different to what culture tells us.

I did just as she said and worked through the pain and within a few days I felt much better.

However, I’ve had other painful moments that have taken much longer to work through.

Often events in life, whether large or small, do not go as planned.

We can “get over it” and sweep it under the carpet often leading us to become angry and rigid. Or we can work through our pain, say “it’s going to be okay” and then move on.

When working through the pain, I’ve discovered by lifting it up to God, He helps me to carry the weight or to let go and move on.  That doesn’t mean I don’t still hurt at the thought of the memory and the memory does not linger, but He eases the pain and eases

my burden.

1 Thessalonians 5 says, “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Regardless of the situation, God uses it to His glory.  At the very least He used this downhill presentation to teach me a lesson.

What do you do when things don’t go as planned?
