Shelter in the Storm

When Hurricane Florence came through, we took in evacuees from a sister facility along the coast. This was an adjustment for all of us.

After all, we had an additional forty residents and all their staff.

Where do you turn during storms in your life?

Two very different responses stand out in my mind.

One lady crossed her arms, rolled her eyes and let out a disgusted sigh. I wondered if that was smoke I saw coming from her nostrils.

The second lady said “At least we can provide shelter for them in this storm and they will be safe. We should make them feel welcome. I would want that if it were me.”

I agreed with the second lady. I was thankful we were able to provide safety for these men and women who were leaving their home and loved ones without knowing what they would be returning to or when they would be returning.

Yes, it was an inconvenience for everyone involved but the most important thing was keeping our seniors safe.

The Lord can calm the storm

I reminded my residents of how much these men and women were giving up as they slept on cots in the activities room and other areas around the facility.

The work load was tripled for many of us, but the goal was to keep them dry, fed and entertained. The later was not an easy task with so many different interest and personalities but we did our best.

After all, when storms come along in our life don’t we need shelter from the storm?

“For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.”  {Isaiah 25:4}

Where do you turn for refuge and shelter in the storm?
