His Kind of Love: Serve One Anther

Before the last supper, Jesus knelt down and washed the disciples feet. He humbled himself and served his disciples.

In John 13, Jesus explained why he provided this service.

“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.”

Jesus is telling us that He is setting the example for the actions He wants us to carry out. He is showing us how to show His Kind of Love to others.

Jesus went on to say, “Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor

is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.”

We do not live in a time of slavery, the way our ancestors did 200 years ago, but there are other types of slavery we struggle with. There is slavery to the flesh. Some people may be a slave to their jobs, spouses or dreams. Others may be a slave to their money, food or an addiction.

But, Jesus reminded us a slave is no greater than the master and we should all serve one another.

In Galatians 5:13, Paul wrote “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

Jesus and Paul both knew we would struggle with the flesh, but only by letting go do we move into freedom.

By being free we can serve one another. None of us is any greater than the other.  Serving one another is all about sharing His Kind of Love.

Author, speaker and Encourager, Liz Curtis Higgs, tells a story in one of her books of being in another country and being asked to help sweep and prepare for the event. She openly admits to struggling with her flesh, before realizing she is still serving Jesus and the ladies that would come here her speak by sweeping the floor.

By helping out, she was serving Jesus and those ladies.

How do you serve others?
