Scripture calms the soul

God Has the Answers

Part of First Place 4 Health’s program is to memorize scripture each week.  During my first session I really struggled with finding the time or desire to memorize scripture, even though I knew I needed to.  I’d grown lax in this discipline and needed to draw closer to the Lord.

                Then a misunderstanding occurred and my car radio went out at the same time.  On the three hour drive to Mama’s, I knew I needed to keep my mind busy and began to memorize my First Place memory verses for the session.

                By the time I returned home, I was still concerned about the misunderstanding, but began to pray the scriptures I’d memorized.  Each day, I would recite the scriptures on the drive to work.

                Eventually the misunderstanding was cleared up and we moved forward.

                But, lately several people have asked “What’s different?  Whatever you’re doing keep it up.  You’re a different person.”  The only thing different is I’m quoting scripture on my commute to work each day.  The Lord is using this time to draw me closer to him and calm my mind and soul.

                “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  {2 Timothy 3:16-17}

            How can you draw closer to God?  What techniques do you use for memorizing scripture?
