Behind the Song: Lovest Thou Me?

Lovest Thou Me? is another beautiful song by Bill and Gloria Gaither.

This song is based on John 21.

To provide a little background, Peter denied Jesus three times “before the rooster crows” on the night Jesus was crucified.

Modern times have brought us many blessings People live in wealth and luxury But the Master asks this question Lovest thou me, lovest thou me, more than these? I love Thee more than this old world could offer All sinful follies I deny for Thee My love, my life, my all, I pledge Thee I love thee Lord, I love thee Lord, more than these More than these

Modern times have brought us many blessings
People live in wealth and luxury
But the Master asks this question
Lovest thou me, lovest thou me, more than these?
I love Thee more than this old world could offer
All sinful follies I deny for Thee
My love, my life, my all, I pledge Thee
I love thee Lord, I love thee Lord, more than these
More than these

Jesus had predicted this to Peter before he was arrested.  {John 18: 13-27}

After Jesus was crucified and rose from the grave, he appeared to the disciples. Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him. {John 21:15-17}

This is considered to be the reinstating of Peter.

Even today, Jesus is asking us “Lovest Thou Me.” I love the last line two lines of the chorus.

“Oh precious lord I love the lord more than all of these More than fame, more than wealth, more than the world”

In today’s day and age that is much easier said than done.

Do you love Jesus more than these?
