Names of God: Lord

There are over six thousand mentions to Lord throughout the Bible.

The name Lord means “someone or something having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler.”

This is because many variations of God, Jehovah, Yahweh and other names to reference the Lord are translated as Lord in the English editions of the Bible.

In Hebrew the name Adonai is translated as my Lords and in Greek the word Krios is translated as Lord.

One of the first scriptures we memorize is “The Lord is my shepherd”. {Psalm 23}

Genesis 2:4 tells us “These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.”

Lord was a title of courtesy for superiors but is rooted in the meaning of ruler.

Jesus was and is recognized as Lord. In the days of the Roman Empire this caused a lot of tension and discord.

“Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”   1 Corinthians 12:3

“And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  Philippians 2:11

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Romans 10:13
