Names of God: King

A king is a ruler of an independent state.

The symbolism of a king appears in the Pentateuch {first 5 books of Old Testament}.  First in the treaty of God with the covenant he made with Moses on Mt. Sinai, where he provided the Ten Commandments.   Secondly, as the ark and tabernacle are set up ion the wilderness as a throne and royal tent to the King, among the Israelites, who are God’s people.

The Lord speaks of being a king later on.  Malachi 1:14 says “For I am a great King” says the Lord of hosts, ‘and my name is to be feared among the nations’.

David often referred to the Lord as his king, in his poetry.

“Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.” (Psalm 5:2)

“The LORD is enthroned as King forever.” (Psalms 29:10)

“You, O God, are my king from of old….” (Psalm 74:12)

“For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.” (Psalm 95:3)

“Shout for joy before the LORD, the King.” (Psalm 98:6)

“I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.” (Psalm 145:1)

In other places in the Old Testament we find:

“O King of the nations.” (Jeremiah 10:7)

“But the LORD is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal King.” (Jeremiah 10:10)

“The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you….” (Zephaniah 3:15)

“The LORD will be king over the whole earth….” (Zechariah 14:9)
