Fruit of the Spirit: Kindness

Recently, I had someone thank me for my kindness.  To me, the act I performed was done without thinking and second naturally.  However, to this person it meant everything.

Dictionary.com defines kindness as:

  1. The state or quality of being kind
  2. A kind act; favor
  3. Kind behavior
  4. Friendly feeling, liking

When we show kindness to others, we are providing a service.  By showing a kindness, we are doing something for the good of that person, regardless of their reaction.

We all need a little kindness in our life

Strong’s concordance defines kindness as “Kindness is goodness in action, sweetness of disposition, gentleness in dealing with others, benevolence, kindness, affability. The word describes the ability to act for the welfare of those taxing your patience. The Holy Spirit removes abrasive qualities from the character of one under His control.”

Wikipedia defines kindness the following way “Kindness is doing something and not expecting anything in return. Kindness is respect and helping others without waiting for someone to help one back. It implies kindness no matter what. We should live “in purity, understanding, patience, and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left”.

So, what does scripture say about kindness?

  1. That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ

A little bit of kindness can go a long ways

    Jesus.      Ephesians 2:7

  3. How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. Psalm 36:7
  4. May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant. Psalm 119: 76
  5. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12
