Eyewitness to the Crucifixion: Judas, Betrays with a Kiss

Last time, we discussed how Satan entered Judas and he left to hand Jesus over to the high priest.  Jesus and the disciples have gone to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus is praying. He ask the disciples to stay away and pray, but they fall asleep. Jesus approaches his inner circle {Peter, James and John} and ask why they were sleeping. While he’s speaking with them a crowd arrives.

While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.  {Matthew 26:47}

Notice we are told a large crowd or a mob has arrived. They are carrying swords and clubs and ready for a fight.  They expects Jesus and his followers to put up a resistance. The high priests and religious leaders have come in full force to take their prey. They are relishing the moment and the plans they have for this man. They are full of pride and gloating that they finally have him.

 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. {Matthew 26:48-50}

There had to be a way to let everyone know who they were there for and who to arrest.  So Judas told the high priest it was the man he would kiss.  He walks right up to Jesus and says “Hi, teacher.” Then he kisses him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”  {Matthew 26:48-50}

Jesus tells Judas to do what he came for

Jesus knows what is to come and he knows why Judas is there. He tells him to what he’s come from.  Not to play games or put on an act.  The Message version states “ Jesus said, “Friend, why this charade?”

He’s asking why are you pretending? We both know what you’re here for.

The men seized Jesus and arrested him.   {Mark 14:43-46}

Jesus is arrested and taken away, where he will stand trial and be crucified.
