Is It All About You?

I had a co-worker who turned every conversation, no matter how inconsequential, to her.

No matter what we discussed, the conversation always became about her or a family member.

Is it all about you?

Over the course of time, many of us backed away from this person.

After all friendship is supposed to be about give and take, but this situation was always about take, take, take.

We all have times when we need a friend to listen and be there for us, but then there are times when the shoe is on the other foot and we need to be there for our friend.

Solomon said in Proverbs 10:8, “The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin.”

Wisdom is knowing when to speak and when not to speak

Solomon was full of wisdom and realized that if we talked too much, and refused to listen in return, we would come to ruin.

His father, David, wrote “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!”   {Psalm 141:3}

David realized that we needed to often watch what we say.   There are times when it is better to be quiet and listen or to hold our tongue than to speak.

Do you make it all about you or do you pause to speak and listen instead?
