Names of God: Immanuel

The name Immanuel is spelled both Immanuel and Emmanuel, meaning God is with us.

The shepherds found Mary, Joseph and the baby in the manger

The word derives from the Hebrew words עִם which means with and ל (‘el) which means God.

The word describes the incarnation and God becoming flesh and dwelling among us. {John 1:14}

The birth of Jesus by a virgin fulfilled the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14. “Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

Isaiah uses the name one more time in Isaiah 8:8, “…and the spread of wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.”

Seven centuries later when the angel appeared to Joseph he said “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).  {Matthew 1:23}

Through Jesus Christ, the Emmanuel, the prophecy was fulfilled and God came and dwelled among us.  Today, God is with us through the Holy Spirit, which is the third part of the trinity.
