Hymn Story: Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak

Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak was written by Frances R. Havergal in 1872.

Havergal is one of several women hymn writers who lived in the late Victorian era of England {18th Century}.

Her father was an Anglican pastor and devoted himself to the improvement of church music in the Church of England.

Frances was inspired by her father’s passion and showed a talent for writing as young as at seven years.

She is well known for writing the hymn “Take my life and let it be consecrated”.

English hymnologist J.R. Watson suggests that this hymn “is a prayer in two directions: for a full and energetic life, and for the surrender of that life in worship and service.”
