Names of God: HaShem

HaShem is used for the name of the Lord, as a replacement to speaking his given name.

The Jews did not want to blaspheme the name of the Lord or show irreverence.

“The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name with a curse; so they brought him to Moses.”  {Leviticus 24:11}

“If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name–the LORD your God”.  {Deuteronomy 29:58}

Jews often use this name even in casual conversation.
