Grace Through Perfectionism

I have a confession to make.

I’m a perfectionist.  I want everything to be perfect and come across as perfect.

But, I am not perfect.

Therefore, no matter how hard I try, I cannot make the event, piece of writing, song, speech, or service provided completely perfect.

Only, with the Lord’s help can I make anything close to perfect.

But, I’m also learning that I have limits.  Sometimes, I have to ask for help.   And other times I have to learn to say no.   {I’m slowly learning how to do this}.

But, you know what?  It’s okay not to be perfect.  It’s okay to ask for help.  It’s okay to say no.

When Ruth and Naomi returned the Bethlehem, they had no one to support them.  Ruth was willing to go to the field and clean the wheat and Boaz saw her and provided additional wheat.  He watched over her and protected her.

Just as Boaz watched over Ruth and helped her, the Lord watches over us.  He provides for us when we need it and sends help when we ask.  He doesn’t expect us to be perfect, but to ask for help as needed and to say no when necessary.

“And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness ” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”   {2 Corinthians 12:9}

So, when we strive for perfection, we need to remember that even in our weakness we are perfected.  After all, the Lord’s grace is sufficient for us.  The Lord has shown me his grace through perfectionism.

Do you struggle with perfectionism?
