Feed Your Soul without Words

“Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Jehovah, among the nations, And will sing praises unto thy name.” Psalms 18:49 (ASV)

Do you ever have days when your heart is so heavy you don’t even know how to pray? I have many days like that. There are even times when I have no idea where the heaviness is coming from. I can’t find a way to put my feelings into words. Still, I want to take my problem before the throne of God and spend time with him.

From a young age, music has been a great love of my life. By the time I was ten I was performing in church with my Dad. There are times when I can sing or play the piano for hours on end. I find that it helps me in so many ways, including worshiping God. Many times when my heart is heavy I tell God that I can’t find the words I need but he knows my heart. That’s when I begin to sing. I’ll sing praise songs, hymns and anything else that come to my heart as I spend time with God. By the time I finish I always feel better. I don’t always have the answers or understand the obstacles in my life, but I know God has heard and understands.

Sing to God

The Bible is filled with songs of praise and worship. King David was a musician and often took his burdens to the Lord through music. He poured out his sorrow and called out to God asking why he’d forsaken him. The book of Psalms is filled with 150 songs he sung to the Lord, some short and others are longer. I’m sure that this is only a small collection of the songs he actually sung to God. It just shows that there are other ways to praise and worship at times without words.

Psalm 100 tells us to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before his presence with singing.” He wants us to sing to him. He knows we may not always be able to put our feelings into words, and he encourages us to worship him in other ways, such as with singing.

Worship through Music

I know, you’re telling me that you’re not musically inclined. But there are other ways to worship. If you’re a dancer you can dance, an artist you can paint or draw, or just go for a good long walk/run and soak in the beauty of our earth as you allow God to feed your soul.

Dance to God

In what ways do you worship with God when the words aren’t there?
