Names of God: Esh Oklah

Esh Oklah is a name of God we may not recognize as easily as some other names.

The Names of God Bible says “Yahweh your Elohim is Esh Oklah, El Kanna….If you do this thing that Yahweh your Elohim considers evil, making him furious, you will quickly disappear from the land you’re going to possess on the other side of the Jordan River. You won’t live very long there. You’ll be completely wiped out.”   {Deuternonmy 4:24-26}

So what does Esh Oklah mean?

Esh Oklah is literally translated from the Hebrew “to eat by fire.”

Fire can burn up, consume, or devour whatever it overtakes.

Why would the Lord burn up or devour someone or something?

The answer is found in Exodus 34:14-16, “Don’t worship any other god. God—his name is The-Jealous-One—is a jealous God.”  {MSG}

Our Lord is a jealous God.

Other references to Esh Oklah include:

“Behold, the Name of the Lord comes from afar, burning with His anger, and in thick, rising smoke. His lips are full of indignation, and His tongue is like a consuming fire.” ~ Isaiah 30:27 (AMP) (“devouring fire” in the KJV)

.“He has broken off in His fierce anger every horn (means of defense) of Israel. He has drawn back His right hand from before the enemy. And He has burned amidst Jacob like a flaming fire consuming all around.” ~ Lamentations 2:3 (AMP)

“Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe; 29 For our God [is indeed] a consuming fire.” ~Hebrews 12:28-29 (AMP)
