Lessons from King David: Death of David

As David grows old and his days are numbered, his son Adonijah attempts to take his throne.

David reigned as king for 40 years but saw much of his family lost

Bathsheba goes before David to plead the case for her son, Solomon.

“The king solemnly promised, “As God lives, the God who delivered me from every kind of trouble, I’ll do exactly what I promised in God’s name, the God of Israel: Your son Solomon will be king after me and take my place on the throne. And I’ll make sure it happens this very day.” {1 Kings 1:29-30}

Even in his last days, David praises God and reminds Solomon to seek the Lord in all things.

He then orders his troops to go with Solomon and for Solomon to be anointed king. {1 Kings 1:33-35}

As David is about to die, he tells Solomon ” “I’m about to go the way of all the earth, but

Solomon became king when David died and listened to his mother, Bathsheba

you—be strong; show what you’re made of! Do what God tells you. Walk in the paths he shows you: Follow the life-map absolutely, keep an eye out for the signposts…then you’ll get on well in whatever you do and wherever you go.” {1 Kings 2:1-4}

Once again, David reminds Solomon to walk with the Lord and allow him to guide and lead.

David then gives commands on judgments to make and who to care for.

“Then David joined his ancestors. He was buried in the City of David. David ruled Israel for forty years—seven years in Hebron and another thirty-three in Jerusalem. Solomon took over on the throne of his father David; he had a firm grip on the kingdom.” {1 Kings 2:10-12}

David dies and comes face to face with his maker.

Solomon was anointed king after David died

David was not a perfect man. He sinned with Bathsheba and failed his own children, but he was a mighty warrior and a man who loved the Lord with all of his heart and soul.

To the very end, David praised the Lord regardless of the circumstances in his life. David faced many trials and tribulations and heartache throughout his life and spent a good decade on the run from King Saul and later from his own son, Absalom.

But, whatever he was going through he remained faithful to the Lord God and sought him in all things.

Isn’t that what the Lord wants of us. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

Do you seek the Lord in all things?
