Hymn Story: Crown Him with Many Crowns

Matthew Bridges was in the middle of the 19th Century battle between the Catholic and Anglican Church.  He wrote scathing articles condemning the Catholic church, before later converting to Catholicism in 1848.002-jesus-crucified

He based the hymn Crown Him with Many Crowns on Revelations 19:12 “…and on His head were many crowns.”

Bridges was born on July 14, 1800 in Essex, England.  He died on October 6, 1894 in Quebec, Canada.

Godfrey Thring later added additional verses to the manuscript.  He made changes so that “Catholic theology was not sung in Protestant churches.”  Each of these verses identify a definite theme of Christ, such as Crown Him the Lord of Love, Son of God, Lord of Peace, etc.

Can you imagine the many crowns Christ wears?
