Being Silent

swan, silence

In Bible Study, we have been discussing forms of worship.  We discussed many various forms such as laughter, tears, music and the spoken word.  However, no matter how much I prayed and asked the Lord for guidance in preparing Bible Study a few weeks ago I was only met with silence.

Sometimes we need to get still enough to hear the Lord

I attributed this to the grief I was experiencing over the loss of a friend, but as the hour for Bible Study grew closer my panic rate and stress factor began to increase.

Pouring my heart out to the Lord, I begged him to reveal to me what he would have me teach. All previous attempts to prepare a lesson were met with a feeling I was not on the right path.

“Speak to me Lord. Why are you silent?” I pleaded on the drive home from work.

“Sometimes the answer comes in the silence.” The silent response resonated in my heart.

How many times had I begged for answers in any given situation only to be met with silence? Sometimes the silence lingers so long we wonder if the Lord hears us or even cares.

The Lord revealed to me there are lessons and reasons for silence including patience, preparation, lessons to learn, a form of worshipping the Lord and waiting for His timetable.

In Psalm 46:10, King David wrote, “He says, “Be still and know I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord reminds us He is God and knows what’s going on and is in control. Even in the silence.

I thought about King David, who had many times of waiting for all the above reasons.  If King David had to wait for God’s plan to unfold, then why do I think I don’t have to wait. After all, it’s in the stillness the Lord speaks.
