Behind the Song: Redemption Draweth Nigh

Scripture promises Jesus will return and only God in heaven knows the day and hour.  Not even Jesus or the angels know when he will return. {Mark 13:32}

Luke 21:28 says, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”

Gordon Jensen

The song was written by Gordon Jensen who published the song with his publishing company Silverline Music {now part of Warner Music Group}.

Jensen spoke of the difficulty in pitching the song.  Many artists told him people wouldn’t be interested in the song.

However, Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys felt it was “the type of song that would be sung for years.”

Many popular groups of the 1970s recorded the song and it is still being sung today.

Gordon Jensen was inducted into the Southern Gospel Hall of Fame in 2012.

  • Actually Silverline music was owned by the Oak Ridge Boys and was a BMI company, so , since Gordon was/is an ASCAP writer the song was transferred to Goldline Publishing, ASCAP in 1972, where it has remained though the catalogue has been sold and re-sold several times through the years. I have no recollection of being inducted to the Southern Gospel Hall of Fame in 2012. While Jesus and the Angels did not know the day or hour of Christ’s return during the years of Jesus’ earthly ministry per Mark 13:32, logic tells us the He has known that information since His ascension and seating at the Right Hand of The Father.

    Through singing the song: “Redemption Draweth Nigh”; I have personally seen many people come to know Jesus as their personal Savior. Thank you Gordon Jensen for allowing the Spirit of the Lord to inspire you to write this phenomenal song.
