Behind the Song: If We Never Meet Again

Elvis recorded the song If We Never Meet Again on his 1960 album His Hand in Mine.

The song was written by Albert E. Brumley.

Albert E. Brumley

Brumley was born near Spiro, Oklahoma in 1905. His childhood was spent in a sparse agricultural community, working the family farm.

He studied at Hartford Musical Institute and later purchased the Hartford Music Company in 1948.

In 1931, he married Goldie Edith Schell, and they raised their six children in Powell, Missouri.

He established the Albert E. Brumley Sundown to Sunup Gospel Sing (now Albert E. Brumley Gospel Sing) in 1969 in Springdale, AR.

He wrote over 800 songs including such hits as “I’ll Fly Away,” “Turn Your Radio On,” “If We Never Meet Again (This Side of Heaven),” “I’ll Meet You In The Morning,” and “He Set Me Free”.

Albert was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Albert Edward Brumley died on November 15, 1977 and is buried at Fox Church of Christ Cemetery near Powell, Missouri.’

  • I love this dear, old song. It always makes me sad, though. It is so true that when we part ways, we never know what life will bring before (if ever) we are brought back together again.
