Armor of God Series: Be Strong in the Lord

Recently in my Bible study, I came across Ephesians 6:10-18 which describes the armor of God.  While I’d read the passage before this time it really struck a chord in my heart.  I’d heard of the armor of God before, but what does it really mean?

We have to put on the armor of God

The book of Ephesians is thought to have been written by the Apostle Paul while he was in prison.  However, some scholars question this authorship.

The epistle was written to the church in Ephesus, which was an ancient Greek city.  The area of Ephesus is near present day Province, Turkey.

The sixth chapter of Ephesians begins with a reminder from the Ten Commandments, to obey your parents and be obedient to your Master.

How do you fight spiritual warfare?

The passage from Ephesians 6:10-18 provides an imagery of spiritual warfare.

Let’s look at the next part of Ephesians and what Paul said.  In the tenth verse of Ephesians, we are told to be strong in the Lord.

In Ephesians 6:10, we are told to “be strong in the Lord”.

What does it mean to be strong in the Lord?

In my younger, rebellious days I did not seek God’s will.  I took many wrong turns that have impacted my life.  Today, I strive to seek God in every part of my life, but the Lord is constantly revealing to me areas where I need to seek Him.

Part of being strong in the Lord, is to seek His will and guidance.

A commentary on Ephesians gives the following explanation, “A Christian separated from Christ is like a branch separated from the vine, or like a limb severed from the body. Therefore, whoever rushes into this conflict without thinking of Christ, without putting his trust in him, and without continually looking to him for strength, and regarding himself as a member of his body, deriving all life and vigor from him, is demented. He does not know what he is doing. He has not strength even to reach the field. With him the whole conflict is a sham.”

How do you deal with landmines?

Life is full of minefields and conflict.

The question is do we turn to the Lord in prayer and seek His help or do we take it upon ourselves?

Matthew Henry Concise Commentary says, “The combat is not against human enemies, nor against our own corrupt nature only; we have to do with an enemy who has a thousand ways of beguiling unstable souls. The devils assault us in the things that belong to our souls, and labour to deface the heavenly image in our hearts. We must resolve by God’s grace, not to yield to Satan. Resist him, and he will flee. If we give way, he will get ground. If we distrust either our cause, or our Leader, or our armour, we give him advantage.”

Do you put on the Armor of God?

With God’s help we are not in the battle alone.  He is there to fight ahead of us, alongside us and behind us.  God’s strength is the greatest power in the universe.

All we have to do is ask!

Are you strong in the Lord?
