Hymn Story: Be Still My Soul

Little seems to be known about the author of the hymn Be Still My Soul. Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel, the author, who was born in 1697.  She is believed to have come from an aristocratic family in Germany. Banbridge, Ireland

Jane L. Borthwick, a member of the Scottish Church, translated the hymn.

The tune is called Finlandia and was written by Jean Sibelius.

A Welsh choir master and professor, David Evans, translated the tune into the rendition known in the United States today.  The song appears in the 1933 Presbyterian Hymnal.
