Review: Anne with an E

If you are a fan of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, you will love Anne with a E

L.M. Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables

which is now available on Netflix.  The show was originally broadcast on a Canadian network before making it’s way to Netflix for streaming.

The series of seven episodes, closely follows the book, while expanding and adding additional details to the storyline.  Although, the final two episodes and cliffhanger differ considerably and leave me wondering how they will be resolved. The storyline follows the first half of the first book, Anne of Green Gables.

The show also delves more into Anne Shirley’s background as an orphan and reveals the trauma that was caused and misbeliefs about the right of passage into adulthood.  For parents with children, I would recommend watching with your children and discussing what is portrayed and any concerns.  {The series may not be appropriate for very young children.}

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

At first, I wasn’t sure how well I would enjoy the series and if I would compare to the much-loved movies featuring Megan Follows.  This Anne is much more worldly and realistic than the books and previous adaptations.

But, Anne with an E won me over in it’s own right.  I soon became engrossed in the story and the characters.  I felt as if I were visiting with old friends throughout the episodes.

I found that I could not stop watching, until I’d seen all seven episodes.  I was hooked and saddened to say goodbye to my friends when the series ended.

The series ends with a major cliffhanger that leaves you longing to know what happens next.

The series has a remarkable and beautiful opening and Amybeth McNutty, the actress playing Anne Shirley, does a wonderful job bringing the much-beloved character to life.

One can only say that they need to hurry up with season 2.
