A Mother’s Request

Jesus has grown into a man

The last time we saw Mary and Jesus, he was twelve years old.   Now he is about thirty years old.   A lot has occurred during this time, although we don’t have a record of what experiences the family had during this time.   We believe that Joseph most likely died sometime in these intervening years.

Jesus has already been baptized by John the Baptist and began to call his disciples.  We’re not told in the scriptures which events Mary may have been present for.

John 2:1-11 (KJV)

And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.  And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

Mary, Jesus, his disciples and many others are at the wedding.  When the wine runs out Mary turns to Jesus and says, “they have no wine.”  She clearly expects him to do something about it.  She is acknowledging that he has some special powers.   We don’t know what powers she may have witnessed from her son over the years.  These miracles were probably quietly done and kept within the family.

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

The Four Gospels Commentary explains this the following way, “Our Lord’s answer indicates that Mary’s request had in it more than a desire for the gift of wine. What she principally wanted was to have Jesus manifest himself as Messiah.”

His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Mary shows not only her complete faith in Jesus, but also commands the servants to do whatever Jesus says.  She may have been a very close friend or family member of either the bride or groom to give such an order, but she also clearly believed in what her son could do.

We know from the rest of the story that Jesus filled up six water pots with wine and it was the best wine the people had ever had.

Jesus’ miracles began, and all with a simple request from his mother.
